TE Connectivity's Trade Compliance Teams interpret laws, rules, and regulations regarding shipping and prepare applications for import/export control certifications and licenses.

The Role

This Assistant General Counsel, Global Trade Services role reports into TE Connectivity’s Associate General Counsel, Global Trade Services.  Global Trade Services (GTS) is a corporate function in the Law Department of TE Connectivity.  This is a dual legal and operational compliance role at a Director level within TE’s GTS leadership team.

The Global Trade Services Counsel provides legal advice and counseling on trade controls (laws and regulations relating to export controls, restricted parties, economic sanctions, and customs matters) by way of example, for:

  • Program development and continuous improvement
  • Policies and procedures development
  • Developing training for business partners and operational compliance teams
  • Monitoring, analyzing and implementing developments in trade laws and regulations
  • Trade-related transactional, contractual and operational advice
  • Internal investigations, enforcement matters, disclosures and corrective actions
  • Ensuring trade automation implementations comport with regulatory requirements
  • Advice to operational trade compliance teams 

This role also leads the Americas Export function of TE Connectivity, supervising operational compliance personnel in daily compliance activities and strengthening of regional programs, including for example, management, oversight and continuous improvement of:

  • Export licensing function
  • Restricted party management
  • End use and end user controls
  • Technical data controls

This role requires strong business acumen and the ability to work as a collaborative business partner across geographies, functions, and businesses to provide legal, policy and strategic support to the businesses and the compliance teams.  The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently, while ensuring connectivity with stakeholders and teammates. 

This position may be located in Washington, DC, or any major TE Connectivity office.
 

What your background should look like:

  • 12+ years of experience in trade controls and policy, which can be satisfied through a mix of law firm, in-house and government experience, with both law firm and company experience being strongly preferred
  • Membership in good standing in at least one US state bar
  • Experience navigating complex trade law issues and dealing with key US trade agencies
  • Willingness to adapt to a flexible schedule to accommodate multiple time zones
  • Strong export controls technical expertise (dual use and military controls) under US laws and regulations (and ability to synthesize non-US laws and regulations), including expertise in classification; license determination, requests and management; technical data and technology controls
  • Dedication to contributing to the success of a diverse, global team
  • Patience, curiosity, tenacity, good humor and a commitment to excellence and collaboration
  • Experience implementing global trade management systems in complex business environments
