RF Engineer

At TE, you will unleash your potential working with people from diverse backgrounds and industries to create a safer, sustainable and more connected world.

Job Overview

The Industrial and Commercial Transportation Business provides rugged interconnect solutions specifically designed for Truck, Bus, Agriculture, Construction and Recreational Vehicles.

As a Data Connectivity Product Development Engineer, you will be enabling improved safety, vehicle automation, and improved efficiencies based on the ability to provide data interconnects for use throughout the Industrial and Commercial Vehicle market.  You will be hands on, supporting Mechanical Design engineers by performing RF simulations and testing to verify the connector designs will meet customer data transmission requirements.

What your background should look like:

  • Develop an understanding of data connectivity applications and market trends within the ICT industry including the assessment of competitive and emerging technologies
  • Engage with the customer to establish signal integrity performance requirements for new product designs
  • Use 3D modelling software to build and modify electrical models
    • Take existing connector models from Development team and manipulate them as needed (adding cable, test boards, adjusting dielectric gaps, etc) for importing to Ansys HFSS or CST.
  • Perform signal integrity simulations for all relevant requirements.
    • Perform simulations to understand expected signal response and compare it to requirements from Open Alliance, USCAR, or others as needed.
  • Support the mechanical development engineers by providing design suggestions as needed to improve simulation results.
    • Once the initial modeling and simulation are done, point out the trouble spots and be able to discuss possible mechanical changes to improve impedance of the signal path.
  • Design and assemble any PCB’s and test adapters needed to perform evaluation and validation of connector signal integrity.
    • Based on connector models, work in appropriate software to develop circuit board designs for High frequency testing.  Place orders with suppliers to get the boards and required components.  Assemble sample connector components, SMA’s, and any other needed components to the boards to prepare for testing.
  • Perform testing to verify electrical performance of the connector components.
    • Calibrate and connect VNA, TDR, or other RF test equipment to samples and measure performance characteristics.  Compare performance to specifications and simulation results.

Skills, Experience & Education:

  • Highly motivated and able to work independently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to deal with multiple projects and priorities
  • The ability to work well with cross functional teams
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • The ability to support on-site customer visits and represent TE well to our customers
  • Ability to work in a global environment – able to accommodate varying time zones, fluent in English (verbal/written), able to collaborate with individuals across geographies

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred, Associates degree or related field considered
  • Background course work in electromagnetics, signals and systems, channel theory, or associated courses
  • Experience in signal integrity engineering or testing preferred.
  • Familiarity with printed circuit board design, fabrication, and assembly
  • Experience with connector or cable assembly design is a plus
  • Knowledge of Commercial Vehicle or Automotive data connectivity protocols is a plus
