Principal R&D/Product Development Engineer

Job Overview

TE Connectivity’s R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams conceive original ideas for new products, introduce them into practice. They are responsible for product development, and qualification from market definition through production and release; assist in the qualification of suppliers for new products to ensure suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services for new or improved manufacturing processes; conduct feasibility studies, testing on new and modified designs; direct and support detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing ramp. The R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams provide all required product documentation including, but not limited to, Solid Model, 2D/3D production drawings, product specifications, and testing requirements. They create and modify detailed drawings and drafting or conceptual models from layouts, rough sketches or notes and contribute to design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product. Typical fields of expertise include: materials, mechanics and systems, electrical, optics, chemistry, software, automation systems, packaging, testing and measurement, and manufacturing of electrical, mechanical and electronic components, products, and their integration into systems.

What your background should look like:

Purpose of Position:
Responsible for the development and introduction of new medical Surgical products.  The Principal Product Development Engineer will champion the execution of new products platforms that deliver an exceptional customer experience.  

Essential Functions:
•    Design and develop new medical products to meet customer requirements within scope (e.g., performance and quality), schedule (e.g., on time delivery), and budget (e.g., price) constraints.
•    Supports the Development of design solutions to complex technical problems where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of many factors.  Solutions require use of ingenuity and creativity.
•    Performs work on multiple NPI projects.  Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.  Provides leadership, periodic consulting, and training for less experienced team members.
•    Lead technical reviews and cost estimation analysis of new products to support quote generation.
•    Translate customer’s product requirements into achievable product specifications and design features.
•    Directs work of technicians and junior engineers including technical coaching/mentoring
•    Help customers resolve product design and processing problems through the use of structured problem solving tools.
•    Provide detailed engineering analysis, reports and presentations.
•    Enhance the entire development process by reducing the time to market.  Drive change with the development team and adopt new tools and processes to improve the development cycle.

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Education:
•    B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred); M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
•    Ten or more years of related medical assembly design and process development engineering experience.
•    Strong familiarity with Medical ISO and FDA regulations, RoHS, REACH, etc.
•    Demonstrated technical contribution through creative product design solutions that have been successfully launched into the market.
•    Demonstrated innovation through invention disclosures, patents, active participation in professional organizations, technical conference presentations, etc..
•    Advanced knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes (e.g., plastic injection molding, machining, anodizing, soldering, automated assembly), sterilization, cable interconnect assemblies, bulk cable design principles, and advanced statistical techniques.  
•    Demonstrated aptitude of innovative mechanical and electrical design skills including but not limited to frequent use of 2D and 3D CAD (Pro/Engineer) modeling, GD&T, and prototype creation.
•    Excellent English communications skills (oral & written)
•    Strong computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, CAD, project management)
•    Works under consultative direction toward long range goals and objectives.
•    Knowledge of market segments & performance drivers.  
•    Can-do attitude, resourceful, action oriented, and drive for results.
•    Individual must be able to effectively communicate technical concepts & impact on products in verbal & written form.
