Job Overview
TE’s Industrial and Commercial Transportation Solutions’ Molding Mfg and Process Development Engineers are responsible for developing and industrializing molding tools for new and existing products.
You will work closely with Core Project Teams inclusive of product development engineers, quality engineers, and project managers to Develop and launch new injection molds.
Job Requirements
Mold and Process Development
- DFx – Work with product engineers and customers on refining the plastic part design to achieve or improve manufacturability.
- Estimate tooling cost, manufacturability cost drivers (cycle time, cavitation, scrap, material usage) for molding processes for existing and new products. Create ramp up scenarios to optimize CAPEX, Utilization with demand.
- Create technical mold specifications for prototypes and production molds.
- Utilize engineering tools such as Moldflow to optimize gate location, melt delivery system, and TIPM to compensate for warpage and shrinkage effects.
- Work with external tooling vendors to develop, build and qualify new molds.
- Analyze & interpret CT Scan data of molded parts using Volume Graphics software. Disposition and prepare conditioning plans & direct mold suppliers to correct nonconforming dimensions on new molds until they meet product drawing and PV test requirements.
- Work with vendors to develop and optimize the molding process parameters on new molds using SIM principles and cavity pressure transducer technology.
- Lead mold design reviews, run at rate, capability analysis, MSAs (Measurement Systems Analysis), correlation studies, DOEs to qualify equipment at supplier and at manufacturing facility.
- Work with other engineering disciplines on the launch team to ensure all product requirements are met all the way through to the final sellable part or assembly.
- Work with Quality Engineering to develop the Process Flow, PFMEA, and Control Plans.
- Work closely with COE to improve and document Successfully Demonstrated Practices
- Utilize Model Based Definition process for product and tooling development, working closely with Product and Mold Engineers to develop and maintain accurate information in digital format for entire product lifecycle.
- Partner with Global Tooling Manager to develop future concepts, processes, and platforms that are flexible, scalable, and digital with focus on lower capital, higher utilization rates, and faster time to market with a target of First Time Right.
- Manage multiple projects with multiple molds projects while balancing quality, cost, timing, and technical risk. Track project milestones, technical risks, capital spending, supplier deliverables, and recovery plans, and communicate to cross functional teams and leadership.
Launch and Industrialization
- Transfer, set up and qualify molds in the final manufacturing location, train plant personnel on use, functionality serve as the SME for the newly introduced tooling.
- Lead structured issue resolution using data-driven problem-solving methods.
- Establish clear action plans, owners, due dates, and escalation paths for open technical issues.
- Lead mass-production trials, capacity analysis, and run-at-rate studies to confirm production readiness for the newly transferred molds.
- Release molds to Sustaining Engineering after all product specifications have been met.
What your background should look like
- Bachelor’s degree Engineering - Plastics Engineering. Master’s degree in Plastics Engineering preferred.
- 5-8 years of experience in mold design and processing. Ideally in electrical connector industry.
- Proficient in PTC Creo or SolidWorks utilizing 3D modeling capabilities: Extensive working knowledge and experience with Part, assembly, and drawings.
- Proficient in flow simulation using software such as Autodesk Moldflow or MoldEx 3D.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of mold making trade. - Working knowledge of geometric tolerance techniques.
- Knowledge of Scientific Injection Molding Principles / Decoupled-2 & Decoupled-3 molding processes.
- Professional proficiency in English and Spanish, including technical discussions and documentation.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 30%, including occasional extended trips for equipment acceptance, installation, and launch support.
