Job Overview

The project engineer is responsible for all aspects of the development, prototyping, and implementation of the RFO contributions to focused cross AD&M BU development efforts.  As such, this individual is the single point of contact for the assigned projects and will be responsible for the project from inception thru deployment.  This position will report to the Manufacturing Development Engineering Manager, with dotted line responsibility to the MGR of Program Management for HPG.

The Project Engineer’s objective is to successfully and effectively identify, organize, schedule, track, and execute to completion, the project development tasks while maintaining timelines and staying within the project cost estimates. This individual will work closely with Product Management, Sales, Manufacturing Development, Operations, and other functions.

Since the majority of the projects to be managed will be customer specific programs as opposed to PAC driven projects, this position will also include the functions Industrial Engineering and basic Quality functions for these and other programs.  It is expected that this position will be a stepping stone to a larger role of managing PAC driven projects once RFO growth justifies individual positions for the Quality & IE functions.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop & execute project’s fiber optic connector, harness and prototyping tasks and (as needed) gap closure plans.
  • Create project schedules that organize tasks in a manor that meets customer delivery schedules.
  • Plan, organize, collect & document information required to provide feedback to satisfy all customer documentation requirements.
  • Conduct status meetings with internal team and external customers.
  • Hands on participation in engineering design and product concept prototyping efforts for harsh environment optical fiber harnesses.
  • As required, participate in Gate reviews to vertical management and possibly BU management
  • Manage project scope, schedule, and budget for project(s)
  • Utilize project systems or Excel to manage project plans, data, and actions.
  • Assure project tasks are completed in accordance with cross BU project objectives as they evolve during the project.
  • Establish project financials and conduct costing reviews in support of project deliverables.
  • Establish SAP information required to generate a fully costed product.
  • Act as Quality function for basic quality needs.  QIP establishment, data review & sign-off, assist / lead FMEA reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical / Opto-Mechanical Engineering or a related subject.  Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Experience in leading key project/product development activities.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in the design and manufacture of ruggedized connector/cable assemblies. Fiber optic (FO) assemblies and components is preferred.
  • Experience with design and test of ruggedized FO connectors and harnesses for harsh environments in defense and/or aerospace applications is preferred.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing principals related to single & multi-fiber termini and harness assembly and cable management is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of optical manufacturing principles such as cable termination to various single fiber and multi fiber optical connectors is preferred.
  • Understanding of project related financials and methods require to generate them.
  • Basic understanding of Quality functions.
