R&D/PRODUCT DVL ENGINEER II

Job Overview

TE Connectivity’s R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams conceive original ideas for new products, introduce them into practice. They are responsible for product development, and qualification from market definition through production and release; assist in the qualification of suppliers for new products to ensure suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services for new or improved manufacturing processes; conduct feasibility studies, testing on new and modified designs; direct and support detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing ramp. The R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams provide all required product documentation including, but not limited to, Solid Model, 2D/3D production drawings, product specifications, and testing requirements. They create and modify detailed drawings and drafting or conceptual models from layouts, rough sketches or notes and contribute to design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product. Typical fields of expertise include: materials, mechanics and systems, electrical, optics, chemistry, software, automation systems, packaging, testing and measurement, and manufacturing of electrical, mechanical and electronic components, products, and their integration into systems.

The primary purpose of this role is to co-ordinate design solutions for the Fibre Optic product range and sustain existing ranges. The post holder will ensure that the innovative designs can be profitably manufactured and that they meet or exceed the customers’ design expectations. This will include engineering analysis of designs, coordination of sample builds, oversight of verification/qualification testing. The position will require direct communication with external customers and suppliers, as well as interaction with internal business development, manufacturing, quality, and testing functions. Some domestic and/or international travel may be required.

What your background should look like:

Main Responsibilities and Tasks

  • To provide engineering so that design deadlines for new products are met in accordance with the Lean Product Development (PAC) process.
  • To create detailed designs, in line with company procedures, project timescales and the cost estimates, that can be profitably manufactured and that meet or exceed the customers’ design expectations.
  • To ensure that new products are ‘designed for manufacture’ by using Simultaneous Engineering techniques and working closely with cross-functional teams.
  • To assist in programmes requiring inter-departmental interaction to ensure that our products are engineered from concept to production in accordance with our stage gate review process.
  • To support Sales and Marketing in the creation of new quotations.
  • To support the Estimating function in the creation of cost estimates for new products, specifically highlighting any areas of technical risk. 
  • To support Product Managers in the sustaining of existing products.
  • To keep abreast of new technologies, materials and processes and use the information to initiate cost savings or product enhancing projects. 
  • To carry out any other reasonable tasks as may be requested from time to time by the Head of Engineering.
  • To observe Heath and Safety regulations as laid down in company procedures and Government legislation.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE

  • BSc or equivalent in Mechanical / Electro Mechanical Engineering or a related subject.  
  • Solid experience in the design and manufacture of fibre optic (FO) assemblies and components is preferred.
  • Experience with design and test of ruggedised FO for harsh environments in defence and aerospace applications is an advantage.
