Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Machinist I to join our machine shop team, with a primary focus on operating manual machines such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses. This is an entry-level machinist position, ideal for individuals who have a strong mechanical aptitude and a foundational understanding of machining practices. The Machinist I will assist in producing precision parts by following blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications using manual machining methods. The role emphasizes safety, accuracy, and continuous improvement in a hands-on environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate a variety of manual machine tools including vertical mills, engine lathes, surface grinders, and drill presses to produce metal parts and components.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, work orders, and job travelers to determine machining operations and dimensions.
- Measure workpieces using precision tools such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges to ensure parts meet dimensional specifications.
- Perform basic machine setups including selecting tools, setting speeds/feeds, and aligning fixtures or workpieces.
- Deburr, clean, and inspect finished parts to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Monitor machines during operation and make adjustments as necessary to maintain tolerances and surface finishes.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to 5S and safety standards at all times.
- Assist with basic maintenance of manual machines including lubrication and routine checks.
- Work under the direction of senior machinists or supervisors and actively seek learning opportunities.
- Document work completed and communicate any issues with materials, drawings, or machine operation.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

What your background should look like
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a machine training program or vocational school preferred.
- 2 to 3 years of experience operating manual machine tools in a manufacturing or job shop environment.
- Basic understanding of machining practices, materials, and tool types.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and tolerances.
- Familiarity with precision measuring instruments and basic math skills, including fractions and decimals.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts.
- Willingness to learn, follow instructions, and work as part of a team.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work with hands in a machine shop setting.
