Job Overview

TE Connectivity's Project Engineering Manager will head up TE’s Engineering design services for utility scale solar projects and other related projects. The PEM works with the business management team, TE support functions, vendors, customers and field level construction managers in the execution of projects in support of the Company’s strategic plan. The Solar PEM will also travel to meet with prospective clients to facilitate discussion on TE’s product portfolio and engineering services.


What You Will Be Doing

  • Perform string size calculations
  • Design Solar PV systems, including 1-line diagrams, array layouts, fence layout, road layout. Layouts to be performed in AutoCAD.
  • Establish Solar PV basis of design including module selection, string sizing, ground coverage ratio, inverter selection, inverter power factor requirements, inverter loading ratio, and cable sizing.
  • Perform energy performance modeling using PVSyst software. Primary use is of PVSyst, but some knowledge of NREL System Advisor Model (SAM) and Plant Predict is required.
  • Assess/survey site conditions and anticipate issues that may arise during construction.
  • Research and development in solar technology for new product development and stay current on new technological developments in the field.
  • Demonstrated structural, mechanical, and electrical design skills, ability to generate accurate, highly detailed construction drawings
  • Use Excel spreadsheets and calculations to size Solar PV systems.
  • Understanding of utility PPA and Interconnection requirements.
  • Assess project team and processes to identify how current technologies are being used, how to apply lean techniques, and identify potential areas for improvement
  • Research and test new technologies with team members in order to achieve greater efficiency
  • Develop new technology evaluation methods and standards
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices to tasks, particularly when analyzing current technical tools, and evaluating tools
  • Generates new ideas, goes beyond the status quo; recognizes the need for new or modified approaches
  • Communicate field observations with design engineering to achieve design solutions
  • Read technical articles and attend Solar PV training to keep up with latest products, design techniques, and construction strategies.
  • Stay on top of latest NEC changes.
  • Determine best layout of collection system; including consideration of constraints such as overhead/underground, follow roads/cross country, and junction box locations
  • Review manufacturer’s data to determine extent of scope for electrical portion of solar project; including wiring requirements and electrical characteristics (i.e. grounding requirements, power factor ranges, lightning protection requirements, generator outputs, etc.)
  • Verify that construction is in agreement with electrical engineering design drawings, including preparatory meetings, and QA/QC
  • Manage and lead the electrical engineering design and equipment procurement through use of submittals, transmittals, and requests for information
  • Provide technical expertise to all parties concerned internally and externally 
  • Ensure Project Managers and Superintendents understand the scope of project during bidding process and provide electrical engineering resource throughout the project
  • Perform loss calculations (100% output/annualized)
  • Develop one-line diagrams of collection system, as well as standard details of electrical construction that are typical to client projects



What your background should look like:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • Education or experience with power systems analysis and design
  • Approximately 5 – 10 years of experience in the electrical engineering of electrical power/distribution systems, particularly renewable energy facilities
  • Functional expertise with CYMCAP for cable ampacity analysis
  • Functional expertise with power systems modeling software such as PVSyst, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSSE, PSLF, or similar software
  • Functional expertise with performance of electrical system studies – load flow and reactive power, short circuit, cable ampacity analysis,
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including study report writing
  • Ability to interface with clients and third parties and maintain working relationships
  • Working knowledge of NEC and NESC
  • Working knowledge and ability to read construction drawings and specifications
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows/Office products
  • Must have a strong work ethic along with a positive attitude
  • Must be a supportive team member, able to work in a collaborative environment capable of both leading and following.
  • Must be self-motivated with an ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines
