Manager, R&D/Product Development Engineering

Job Overview

TE Connectivity’s R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams conceive original ideas for new products, introduce them into practice. They are responsible for product development, and qualification from market definition through production and release; assist in the qualification of suppliers for new products to ensure suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services for new or improved manufacturing processes; conduct feasibility studies, testing on new and modified designs; direct and support detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing ramp. The R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams provide all required product documentation including, but not limited to, Solid Model, 2D/3D production drawings, product specifications, and testing requirements. They create and modify detailed drawings and drafting or conceptual models from layouts, rough sketches or notes and contribute to design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product. Typical fields of expertise include: materials, mechanics and systems, electrical, optics, chemistry, software, automation systems, packaging, testing and measurement, and manufacturing of electrical, mechanical and electronic components, products, and their integration into systems.


The Energy division has an established history of innovation in designing connectors for use across the world’s power networks. The Engineering Manager will lead our newly formed Connectors & Fittings Product Development team in Fuquay-Varina, NC, designing and developing new connector products for overhead and solar applications. S/He will be the technical lead and steer the team, ensuring novel connector designs and technologies are identified and used for product development.  S/He will mentor, train, and support the development of the engineering team. Responsibilities include:

  • Support Energy leadership and execute the Connectors and Fittings product development pipeline
  • Set and manage priorities for the engineering team
  • Ensure project schedules and budgets remain on track and new products launch on-time
  • Drive engineering team to conceive innovative ideas for new products, design and qualify from market definition through industrialization/product launch using a stage-gate process
  • Be a strong technical connector expert and provide support to Product Management, Procurement, Operations, & Quality teams
  • Attend/support customer meetings. Participate on technical standards committees and working groups (IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, UL)
  • Drive cost-out activities for Connector products
  • Build and provide leadership to Energy’s Bangalore engineering team with responsibility for overhead and solar connector products
  • Support product compliance and approvals for all new products and platforms as required by our customers
  • Monitor engineering metrics with regular reports to show progress toward monthly/quarterly/annual goals
  • Embrace continuous improvement and achieve YoY engineering productivity by continuously eliminating waste, improving prioritization, launch on-time, and time to market
  • Partner effectively with the sales organization to drive VoC and ensure the team develops the right offering to the customer

  • Able to travel both domestically and globally as required
  • Able to accommodate meeting times with colleagues in other time zones


What your background should look like:

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s or PhD degree preferred) in mechanical, electrical, or related engineering discipline
  • 10+ years of related engineering experience with 3+ years in managing teams
  • 3+ years of experience with product design of connectors for energy power networks, solar farms, and/or network accessories 
  • 5+ years of experience designing connectors utilizing aluminum, copper, and polymeric materials
  • Knowledge of designing grounding connector systems an advantage
  • Intimate working knowledge with ANSI, IEEE, IEC connector specifications and experienced in connector compliance regulations (UL, TUV, CE etc.)
  • Familiarity with engineering tools (LDFSS or DMAIC), processes and risk assessment methods (eg FMEA, DOE) and other relevant engineering process ethodologies
  • LEAN/Six Sigma certification 
  • Project planning and execution skills
