Job Overview

TE Connectivity’s R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams conceive original ideas for new products, introduce them into practice. They are responsible for product development, and qualification from market definition through production and release; assist in the qualification of suppliers for new products to ensure suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services for new or improved manufacturing processes; conduct feasibility studies, testing on new and modified designs; direct and support detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing ramp. The R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams provide all required product documentation including, but not limited to, Solid Model, 2D/3D production drawings, product specifications, and testing requirements. They create and modify detailed drawings and drafting or conceptual models from layouts, rough sketches or notes and contribute to design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product. Typical fields of expertise include: materials, mechanics and systems, electrical, optics, chemistry, software, automation systems, packaging, testing and measurement, and manufacturing of electrical, mechanical and electronic components, products, and their integration into systems.

The Corporate Technology Center (CTC) Analytical group at TE Connectivity in Fremont, CA invites applicants for a Sr. material scientist.  TE Connectivity is the home of well-known brands of electric and electronic components with a wide span of applications from automotive to appliance.  The CTC Analytical group plays an integral role within the company through focusing on advanced material characterization techniques to determine root cause analysis of manufacturing issues and supporting new initiatives within R&D pertaining to material and process development along with providing technical expertise in materials issues.  Our team of experts offers tremendous opportunities for innovation and advancement of original knowledge in the field. 
We seek an energetic and creative candidate to work closely with other team members from the analytical team to lead advanced material analysis for R&D and business unit projects. The candidate will also provide consulting and support to TE’s business units on materials challenges.  The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in polymer science, material science, plastics engineering, or a similar field of study and enjoy hands-on work in a lab environment.


•    Hands-on material characterization in the following instrumentation: SEM/FIB, EBSD, Raman, XRD, Rotational Rheometer, DMA, Capillary Rheometer, TGA, DSC, TMA, and TGA-GC/MS to support R&D projects and business unit requests
•    Fundamental understanding of advanced analytical techniques pertaining to spectroscopy, rheology, thermal analysis, and morphology
•    Develop test methods and protocols for complex materials issues
•    Work with cross-functional teams in material/product/process development and problem solving, document technical results in written reports, present results at team and customer meetings, and maintain instrumentation and state of the art analysis facilities.
•    Lead advanced analytical method development and participate on multiple materials design projects in metal and polymer composite related area, propose/recommend analytical solution to support material research for corporate technology team. 


What your background should look like:

  • Ph.D. in Material Science, Polymer Science, Plastics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
  • In-depth knowledge of polymeric materials, physical properties, formulation, and/or processing, and in-depth knowledge of material characterizing techniques, such as Rheology, DMA, FTIR, GC-MS, TGA, DSC, TMA, and understanding of structure-property relationships
  • Hands-on experience using and interpreting data from analytical techniques in the following areas: SEM, FIB, EDAX, XRD, EBSD, TEM, XPS, NMR, GC-MS, DMA, TGA, DSC, TMA, Rheology, etc.
  • Highly self-motivated individual with an emphasis for action and impact
  • A strong team player with a positive, proactive, and professional attitude
  • Creative, innovative, with no hesitation to head into the lab to try out new ideas
  • Excellent communication skills, and excellent written / verbal / presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work on projects with tight timelines
  • Adherence to lab and chemical safety requirements, IP policies, and demonstrated strong work ethic and soft skills.
