Job Overview

The Environment Specialist provides environmental technical expertise and compliance support across multiple manufacturing sites, and supports the implementation and continuous improvement of business environmental compliance programs while ensuring environmental risks, regulatory requirements, permits, and company standards are effectively identified, managed, and maintained. This individual will also serve as a regional environmental subject-matter expert, partnering with site EHS, Operations, Engineering, Facilities, Legal, and business leadership to proactively identify environmental risks, strengthen compliance systems, and support compliant manufacturing operations.

Job Requirements

• Provide environmental technical support and subject-matter expertise to manufacturing sites across the assigned region.
• Evaluate compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, permits, company standards, and other environmental requirements.
• Support and/or lead environmental legal compliance audits, risk assessments, and compliance reviews; assist sites in developing corrective actions and verify the effectiveness of significant corrective actions.
• Provide technical support for air permitting and emissions compliance, including permit applicability evaluations, emissions inventories, permit applications and modifications, emission and throughput calculations, compliance monitoring, recordkeeping, and regulatory reporting.
• Periodically verify that environmental permits, registrations, and authorizations remain aligned with actual site equipment, processes, materials, production volumes, emission sources, discharges, and operating conditions.
• Provide technical oversight and support for hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including waste characterization, generator-status determination, accumulation and storage, labeling, transportation and disposal, manifests, vendor management, and regulatory documentation.
• Provide technical support for wastewater and stormwater compliance, including permitting, sampling and monitoring requirements, analytical-data review, discharge limitations, treatment-system performance, inspections, reporting, and investigation of potential unauthorized discharges.
• Support site programs for spill prevention and response, chemical management, storage tanks, environmental releases, and environmental emergency response.
• Support investigation and management of environmental incidents, releases, permit deviations, exceedances, Notices of Violation (NOVs), and other significant environmental events. Lead or support root-cause analysis and development of corrective and preventive actions.
• Review and validate environmental compliance data used for permit tracking, emissions calculations, regulatory reporting, waste reporting, wastewater reporting, and other environmental submissions to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriate documentation.
• Monitor environmental corrective actions and assist sites in prioritizing closure based on regulatory and environmental risk. Escalate overdue or high-risk actions as appropriate.
• Analyze environmental audit findings, incidents, regulatory events, and compliance trends across sites to identify repeat and systemic risks and develop scalable corrective actions, tools, standards, and best practices.
• Develop and maintain standardized environmental compliance tools, procedures, permit matrices, compliance calendars, checklists, and technical guidance to improve consistency across the region.
• Coordinate and provide technical oversight of environmental consultants, laboratories, waste vendors, and other environmental service providers.
• Monitor emerging environmental regulations and evaluate potential impacts to regional manufacturing operations.
• Promote sharing of environmental compliance best practices, regulatory lessons learned, and significant environmental events across sites to prevent recurrence and drive continuous improvement.

What your background should look like

Education/Experience

• Generally requires a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related technical discipline, with a minimum of 8 years of progressive environmental compliance experience, preferably within manufacturing or industrial operations. Master's degree or higher, or local equivalent, may be preferred at this level.
• Demonstrated technical experience across multiple environmental regulatory programs, including air permitting and emissions, hazardous waste, wastewater/stormwater, chemical management, spill prevention, and environmental regulatory reporting.
• Demonstrated ability to independently interpret environmental regulations and permit conditions, determine regulatory applicability, assess manufacturing operations for potential compliance gaps, and develop practical risk-based solutions.
• Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and environmental compliance-management/data systems is preferred.
• Professional environmental certifications such as CHMM, PE, QEP, REM, or equivalent are preferred but not required.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, project-management, and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence and provide technical guidance across multiple organizational levels and functions.
• Ability to travel to manufacturing sites within the assigned region as required.
