Job Overview

The cable route engineer in the marine engineering group is responsible for route engineering from the preliminary design phase through the end of the marine survey.  This person will ensure that contractual commitments are carried through to desktop study and survey contracts from the system supply contract (when applicable/available).  This function involves working closely with Marine Services Bids and Proposals personnel and other sections of the Marine Engineering Solutions Group.  To design with these specifications in mind, this engineer must identify and apply the best available data in the region (bathymetry, charts, databases) where the work is conducted and, through due diligence, ensure that no fundamental miscalculations are made in the early stages of a project.

This manager will write technical specifications for desktop studies, execute DTS contracts, research for and write in-house studies, and engineer the route and straight-line diagram for survey contracts. For survey operations, this person will manage route survey marine operations both at-sea and in the office, execute cable type and route selection throughout the survey phase of project. This manager is the first member of Marine Services that the client will interact with beyond the initial sales team. The responsibility of beginning the project properly, therefore, rests on this person.

Training newer hires in the marine engineering group is another important responsibility that rests upon the more senior members of the group. The members of the team with less experience depend upon the senior members for guidance in every aspect of the job from administrative items to details/nuances of route engineering and software questions, however new members with specialties must also lend their abilities to the betterment of the group. Depending upon the background and education of the manager, they will educate their colleagues from their personal areas of expertise.
