Director, Strategy and Business Development

Job Overview

As a key leader of the Industrial Solutions’ Strategy community you will play a pivotal role in helping the Industrial Solutions Segment and its constituent business-units (BUs) achieve their full potential in terms of growth and value creation. You will be key trusted advisor to Segment Leadership, BU General managers, and BU Strategy Leads in developing and executing strategy that create shareholder value. In this role, you will also interact with the TE’s top Leadership including the CEO, the Chief Strategy Officer, and the Chief Financial Officer, to address the most important strategic questions facing TE. The position is a feeder role for strategy leadership and general management roles in the company. We expect the strategists to have strong interest and potential to progress to roles with higher responsibilities. You will report to the Vice President of Strategy for Industrial Solutions Segment.

Key Responsibilities

Growth Champion
• Help develop strategies that drive above-market growth, working closely with the business-unit leadership. Ensure the strategies incorporate internal inputs (e.g., Sales, Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing) and external factors (e.g., technology, customer needs, regulations, competitors, etc.).
• Help identify new growth platforms within business units, and across businesses – through the discovery of attractive market spaces, determining what it takes to win, assessing competitive position & business models, and then helping the organization to align on the strategic direction and execution plan. These growth platforms should have a balanced mix of core and adjacent spaces that significantly expand TE’s addressable market. • Champion growth ideas with key stakeholders to mobilize the organization and facilitate execution.

Strategy & Planning cycle
• Help BUs develop and articulate crisp and coherent strategies, which also generate excitement about the businesses, during the annual strategy planning process. These strategies should include action plans and priorities for the key enablers such as Technology, Sales, GTM, Pricing, Operations, & Supply Chain.
• Identify, synthesize and communicate key trends across industries, segments, and competitors.
• Ensure that the business strategies clearly articulate the business choices, are well-defined, lay out talent & resource requirements, and are implementable. Constructively challenge business decisions, where-to-play and how-to-win choices. Successful strategy should result in industry-leading growth and profit margins.
• Help communicate strategy and growth ideas to TE Leadership and Board-of-Directors.

Talent Development
• Support and enhance talent management for the strategy organization, including talent acquisition, development, and retention.
• Participate in recruiting events and be an ambassador for TE to the Universities.
• Guide, coach, and mentor junior strategy talent.
• Strengthen strategy muscle deep inside the business units, through training, joint-projects, seminars etc.

Mergers and Acquisitions
• Drive development of M&A pipeline. Lead research and analysis work for pipeline development.
• Meet potential M&A candidates; be an ambassador for TE to present TE’s value proposition to the potential partners and acquisition candidates.
• Assess strategic fit, synergy potential, and risks to enable well-informed investment decisions. Work on the due diligence and approval process.
• Help create post-merger integration plans and support implementation.

Year One Success Factors

• Understanding of the end-markets and business models of the four BUs inside Industrial Solutions.
• Augmenting funnel of strategy ideas.
• Successful execution of cadence-based activities such as Strategy Week, Growth Review etc.
• Successful execution of the assigned strategy deep-dive projects.
• Build-up of the M&A pipeline.

Candidate Profile

Success in the role requires a balance of people skills, business acumen and strategic mindset. Specific criteria include:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Science or Engineering from a leading institution is required. MBA from a top graduate program is highly preferred.
• 8+ years of cumulative business experience. 4+ years of strategy experience in senior-level roles with a top-tier consulting firm or a leading global corporation.
• Strong business acumen. Track-record of success in originating growth ideas and creating investment thesis that led to significant organic and/or inorganic growth.
• Strong teamwork skills – track record of success in delivering results in a cross-functional, non-hierarchical, and cross-cultural environment. Ability to effectively work with and influence individuals at all organization levels.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills – ability to convey messages concisely in both text format and presentation format to busy executives.
• Managerial courage to constructively challenge and influence senior leaders and experts in the organization.
• Ability to influence senior executives and others to get buy-in. Skills and tenacity to achieve results without formal authority.
• Good organization and skills in driving strategy projects from start to finish, from project scoping to execution.
• Willingness to travel globally (up to 30%) to TE locations, industry conferences, and customer/partner sites.
• Must have fluency in English. Fluency in German will be a strong plus. Must be comfortable working and leading in a multi-cultural environment.
