Supervisor Electrical Engineer

Job Overview
TE Connectivity’s R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams conceive original ideas for new products, introduce them into practice. They are responsible for product development, and qualification from market definition through production and release; assist in the qualification of suppliers for new products to ensure suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services for new or improved manufacturing processes; conduct feasibility studies, testing on new and modified designs; direct and support detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing ramp. The R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams provide all required product documentation including, but not limited to, Solid Model, 2D/3D production drawings, product specifications, and testing requirements. They create and modify detailed drawings and drafting or conceptual models from layouts, rough sketches or notes and contribute to design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product. Typical fields of expertise include: materials, mechanics and systems, electrical, optics, chemistry, software, automation systems, packaging, testing and measurement, and manufacturing of electrical, mechanical and electronic components, products, and their integration into systems.
What your background should look like:

ROLE OBJECTIVE 

The Supervisor Electrical Engineer will report to the Product Design & Simulation Manager and will be a member of the Product Design & Simulation Engineering team and responsible for the design of products and sustaining engineering support for existing products. The role will support mainly TE Energy’s Cable Accessories product line but may include Insulation & Protection and Connectors & fittings for LV, MV & HV applications from time to time.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designing TE Energy passive (voltage & current sensors incl. PD) and active (temperature, humidity, …) sensor products for MV & HV using polymeric and metallic materials and electronic components/modules
  • Electrical field simulation and electronic circuit modelling using relevant software tools (PSPICE, COMSOL, ANSYS, ELECTRO or similar).
  • Assist global engineering team with New Product Developments across a range of sensor projects and executing on cost optimization/reduction (VA/VE) opportunities for the business
  • Support product compliance and approvals for all new sensor products and platforms as required by our customers.
  • Successfully facilitate transfer and support of new product introduction (NPI) into high volume manufacturing.
  • Reverse Engineering competitor products
  • Supporting the design of jigs & fixtures for product testing where required. 
  • Preparing design verification test plans, Design & Process FMEAs
  • Recording results of design reviews and design decision meetings and report writing
  • Be a strong technical partner and provide support to Product management teams. Attend/support customer meetings, technology days and site visits as required.
Education & Knowledge
  • Bachelors of Engineering - Electrical Engineering Degree only
  • Organised, methodical and self-motivated individual with the ability to work under minimal supervision, on own initiative and meet own commitments is essential.
  • Excellent understanding of EMI with respect to high power frequency and transient voltages and currents in energy networks and their effect on measuring cables, circuits, devices and sensors (ground potential rise, capacitive/inductive coupling into circuits, influence on sensor’s signal grounding schemes, …).
  • Good understanding of travelling waves on power cables and OH lines also in combination with surge arresters.
  • Good understanding of surge protection technology in HV/MV networks, but also electronic systems.
  • Know-how about designing high voltage dividers (capacitive/resistive) with respect to linear frequency characteristic, temperature drift (operating conditions -40°C to +90°C), ageing and transient over-voltage protection.
  • Know-how about design/selection of current transformers with respect to frequency characteristic, power frequency short-circuit current performances, switching & lightning current effects.
  • Basic understanding of partial discharge mechanism and measuring systems (coupling quadrupoles, signal levels, frequency range, …)
  • Excellent understanding of signal/measuring technology (signal reflection, impedance matching, signal to noise ratio, …)
  • Basic understanding of materials properties (permittivity, conductivity, permeability, dissipation factor, influence of temperature and field stress and time (=ageing) on these parameters, electrical break down limits, …)
  • Knowledge about energy harvesting in HV environment (effect of corona discharges, electric field enhancement at sharp edges, field stress management, …) 
  • Experience with product design of high-voltage power networks and/or network accessories (joints/splices, terminations Switchgear connect, Insulators, surge arrestors, etc.) essential.
  • 7 to 10 years electrical engineering related experience for Energy market applications
  • Knowledge about relevant standards related with sensors in MV and HV networks
  • Basic knowledge about standards related with MV & HV cable accessories especially on qualification testing
  • Willingness to travel
  • Fluent English
  • German (an advantage)
