Job Overview

To support the design and development of new cable interconnect assemblies for Medical Devices

TE Connectivity’s R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams conceive original ideas for new products, introduce them into practice. They are responsible for product development, and qualification from market definition through production and release; assist in the qualification of suppliers for new products to ensure suppliers deliver quality parts, materials, and services for new or improved manufacturing processes; conduct feasibility studies, testing on new and modified designs; direct and support detailed design, testing, prototype fabrication and manufacturing ramp. The R&D/Product Development Engineering Teams provide all required product documentation including, but not limited to, Solid Model, 2D/3D production drawings, product specifications, and testing requirements. They create and modify detailed drawings and drafting or conceptual models from layouts, rough sketches or notes and contribute to design modifications to facilitate manufacturing operation or quality of product. Typical fields of expertise include: materials, mechanics and systems, electrical, optics, chemistry, software, automation systems, packaging, testing and measurement, and manufacturing of electrical, mechanical and electronic components, products, and their integration into systems.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Support the design and development of new medical products to meet customer requirements within scope (e.g., performance and quality), schedule (e.g., on time delivery), and budget (e.g., price) constraints.
  • Support development of design solutions, at component and final assembly level, to complex technical problems where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of many factors.  Solutions require use of ingenuity and creativity.
  • Performs work under general supervision on multiple NPI projects.  Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.
  •  Translate customer’s product requirements into achievable product specifications and design features.
  • Support FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) and risk analysis reviews on NPI (New Product Introduction) products. 
  • Support a series of cross-functional design reviews throughout the NPI process.
  • Document product development progress conforming to operating procedures of the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) phase-gate system.
  • Coordinate proof-of-concept and design verification testing and write final test reports for communication with internal and external customers. 
  • Ensure new designs meet relevant environmental and regulatory Design History File (DHF) requirements.
  • Resolve quality problems associated with design and act as a technical resource to other cross-functional engineers as needed.
  • Implement design improvements on legacy products for cost savings.
  • Work effectively with cross-functional core team members located in the US
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices, new technologies, and equipment relative to TE products and processes.
  • Able to be occasionally flexible with working hours to support interface with US based team members

Qualifications & Essential Experience

  • B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical preferred); M.S. in Engineering a plus. Minimum five or more years of related electro-mechanical product design and development engineering experience.
  • Six Sigma Green or Black belt is a plus.
  • Medical product development experience and knowledge of ISO 13485 and FDA regulations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of PCBA design and processing
  • Demonstrated technical contribution through creative product design solutions that have been successfully launched into the market.
  • Demonstrated inventiveness through invention disclosures, patents, active participation in professional organizations, technical conference presentations, a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes (e.g., plastic injection molding, machining, anodizing, soldering, automated assembly), sterilization, cable interconnect assemblies, bulk cable design principles, and advanced statistical techniques.  
  • Demonstrated aptitude of innovative mechanical and electrical design skills including but not limited to frequent use of 2D and 3D CAD (Creo and/or Solidworks) modeling and Model Based Definition, GD&T, and prototype creation.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) theory and experience in performing mechanical and mold flow simulations. ANSYS mechanical and Moldex3D applications a plus.
  • Working knowledge of additive manufacturing processes for rapid prototyping.
  • Experience with JMP and/or Minitab Statistical Analysis applications a plus.
