Job Overview

TE Connectivity’s Environmental Test Laboratory located in ‘s-Hertogenbosch is responsible for preparing and performing product tests and for reporting of the test results. The Lab supports the engineering groups on the area of product testing during and after the development process. The scope of the lab comprises environmental tests, mechanical stress tests, electrical/electronic tests, EMC tests, RF tests and signal integrity tests.

We have identified 3 high level projects that would be suitable for either MBO (year 4) or HBO students. 

 

 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)

TE is investing into connectors with embedded electronics, sensor applications and IOT applications. With this, topics like Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing become more and more important. The Environmental Test Lab (ETL) is equipped EMC tests per IEC 61000-4 and -6 procedures. Due to the size of the anechoic chamber, we only test pre-compliance. In the current situation, the anechoic chamber can only be used to compare two samples of the same product with alterations to see if there is improvement or not. To fully understand the difference between a full compliant EMC measurement and the pre-compliance we perform, we need someone to perform a full calibration of the anechoic chamber per international standards and determine the tolerances of the chamber.

Shielding effectiveness

While moving into the cloud and big data applications it is more important than ever to have stable and fast data connections in industrial environments. On the other hand, power connections need to transfer more power into factory environments to drive all machinery. These cable connections unintentionally radiate energy to their surroundings. The Environmental Test Lab at TE Connectivity uses multiple methods of testing the shielding effectiveness, all of which are relatively new and will need some further investigation. We are looking for someone to validate the two test set-ups we use for testing shielding effectiveness and create a guideline on how to interpret the standards and results from the test set-up.

Signal Integrity (SI)

TE is working more and more on data and communications connector assemblies. The Environmental Test Lab at TE Connectivity is working on methods for testing the integrity of the data sent though these connector assemblies. The current lab equipment enables us to test  CAT 6A (10Gbitps). However, we want to prepare ourselves for upcoming CAT 7(A) and CAT 8 by further developing the existing set-up in combination with a RF switch and the already designed test boards.  We are looking for someone to automate and validate this test setup. This will require the student to use Matlab to create an automatic program with GUI to control the system and do a research on different methods to validate a RF based test set-up.
