TE Connectivity is looking for an experienced Product Development Engineer for its Transportation Sensors Engineering Organization as part of the Sensor Development Team located in Timisoara, Romania. This position reports to the Engineering Manager of the Sensors R&D Team. The engineer is primarily responsible for developing and improving sensor products from concept through industrialization and sustaining, ensuring that product performance, quality, cost and timing targets meet customer and project requirements. The role also supports product testing, characterization and verification activities related to assigned development projects.
The Product Development Engineer will lead and contribute to the development of sensor products and product platforms serving Automotive and Industrial & Commercial Transportation markets. The role includes translating customer needs into technical requirements, developing product concepts, performing design analysis, coordinating prototypes, driving design verification and supporting the release of robust, manufacturable products.
The Product Development Engineer will work closely with engineering teams in Speyer and Bangalore, as well as with Software Development, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Purchasing and other functions to ensure robust product architecture, design feasibility, manufacturability and compliance throughout the product lifecycle. The engineer will interact with global engineering teams and Centers of Expertise to select suitable technologies, materials, design approaches and production concepts for assigned projects.
The engineer will be a core member of the project development team and a primary technical contact for the assigned product design. The role requires close collaboration with product, software, manufacturing and process engineers, quality teams, customers, suppliers and technical experts across the global Transportation Sensors organization.
The Product Development Engineer will apply DFSS methodologies, systems engineering principles and Lean Product Development practices to evaluate product concepts, manage design risks and deliver qualified products. The ideal candidate has strong experience in sensors, electronics, mechanical interfaces and cross-functional product development, with a successful record of launching products into automotive and/or transportation markets.
Your main tasks:
- Serves as a key member of the cross-functional project team within TE LEANPD, translating customer, market, regulatory and manufacturing needs into clear product and system requirements.
- Develops sensor products, electronics and system solutions throughout the complete lifecycle from concept and feasibility through industrialization and sustaining.
- Defines product architecture, technical concepts, interfaces, tolerances and design requirements, and evaluates concepts using calculations, simulations, tolerance analysis, prototyping and engineering judgment.
- Plans and coordinates design verification and product validation, drives prototype builds and design reviews, and implements improvements based on documented results.
- Owns product engineering documentation and applies DFSS and structured engineering methods, including DoE, tolerance analysis, DFMEA, risk assessments and design reviews.
- Works with suppliers, manufacturing teams and customers on component selection, design for manufacturability, tooling, industrialization, product issue investigations and corrective actions.
- Supports Functional Safety, product cost optimization, platform reuse, design standards, best practices and continuous improvement throughout the product lifecycle.
- Defines product characterization, design verification and validation test methods, acceptance criteria and test plans.
- Performs or coordinates selected electrical, mechanical and environmental tests, analyzes and documents results, and supports root-cause identification and product improvements.
- Supports fit-for-purpose test equipment and fixtures and ensures product designs comply with applicable quality, environmental, safety and automotive development standards.
Your ideal profile:
YOU MUST HAVE
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Systems Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in product development, electronics development, sensor engineering, systems engineering or a related engineering function.
- Experience developing automotive or industrial electronic products through concept, design, verification, industrialization and product launch.
- Strong understanding of sensor products, electronics, mechanical interfaces, materials and product design principles.
- Experience with requirements management, design reviews, design verification, product validation, DFMEA and structured problem-solving methods.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical or electrical design principles, including material selection, tolerances, interfaces, engineering drawings and design for manufacturability.
- Knowledge of engineering analysis methods such as tolerance analysis, DoE, statistical analysis and risk assessment.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and global engineering team to develop and improve products and development processes.
- Strong teamwork, ownership and a goal-oriented, data-driven approach.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications and relevant engineering design and analysis tools.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with stakeholders, cross-functional teams and subject matter experts.
- Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under technical and project constraints.
- Willingness to travel as required, approximately 20–25%.
WE VALUE
- Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant technical discipline.
- Experience in position, speed, Hall-effect, inductive, magnetoresistive or similar sensor technologies.
- Experience with automotive communication interfaces such as CAN, LIN, SENT, PWM and analog interfaces.
- Practical experience with sensor characterization, design verification, environmental testing, data acquisition and common laboratory measurement equipment.
- Experience with requirements management and ALM tools such as Codebeamer, Polarion, DOORS or equivalent.
- DFSS Green Belt, Black Belt or equivalent Six Sigma certification.
- Knowledge of IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 26262, ASPICE or comparable automotive development standards.
- Experience with product architecture, design for manufacturability, design for cost and value engineering.
- Knowledge of electronics design, PCB development, embedded systems and product integration.
- Experience with CAD, PDM and product lifecycle management tools, engineering drawings and configuration management.
- Functional Safety knowledge and experience.
- Experience working with global engineering organizations and cross-location project teams.
- Fluency in Romanian, English or German.
